PUBLIC – PRIVATE DIALOGUE ADVANCES COFFEE DATA GOVERNANCE IN TANZANIA

Dar es Salaam, 17 April 2026 The Tanzania Coffee Board, in collaboration with the European Union Delegation to Tanzania, convened a public–private dialogue at the New Africa Hotel aimed at strengthening data governance within Tanzania’s coffee sector through the Tanzanian Central Coffee Registry.

The Central Coffee Registry, which is now operational, contains geolocation data for more than 200,000 coffee farm plots across Kagera and Songwe regions. The system is designed to enhance traceability, improve regulatory oversight, and facilitate access to international markets. It also supports compliance with the EU Deforestation Regulation, which requires proof that coffee production is not linked to deforestation.

The dialogue brought together stakeholders from government institutions, private sector actors, and cooperative unions to deliberate on a shared framework for data management and utilization. Discussions focused on ensuring transparency, safeguarding farmer data ownership, and promoting equitable access to information across the value chain. The initiative is expected to improve data quality, reduce inefficiencies, and strengthen the overall performance of the coffee sector.

With financial support from the European Union and implementation support from partners including the European Forest Institute, the project is set to enter its second phase. This next phase will expand geolocation data collection to Kilimanjaro and Ruvuma regions, further advancing Tanzania’s efforts to build a transparent, sustainable, and competitive coffee industry.
